Its not actually 42. When the spaceship full of telephone sanitisers etc. crashed into Earth, the original humans were killed and so the computer program then did not work properly, so the answer of 42 was wrong. 
I love the essay on this page, the number of times I have read fanfiction and just wanted to say the same thing.
